reflections on proofreading and copyediting |
| WILLIAM
CRITCHLEY, managing editor of
freelancers.co.uk, has a degree in
law but prefers the world of publishing, authors, books, and editing to
dry legal tomes. Married with three children, Rupert aged 19, Irena aged
15, and Julian who is 11 years old. Irena was named after the Greek island
of Santorini (also known as Thera but
originally Santa Irene). |

in publishing – the truth! |

Sister
brings home typescript
|
I began working as a freelance
editor and proofreader for major publishing houses more than
10 years ago, having started almost by accident. Let me explain. My sister
came home from work one day with a bulky typescript she'd been given to
copyedit.
She asked me to help. I found the
work came quite naturally, and I liked the idea of getting paid for reading
and correcting interesting books at home,
as well as choosing my own hours.
It soon developed into a really good income, and later my main source of
income, when work came in regularly. |

Six
on the desk
|
Before long, I found that I had at
least six books on my desk at any one time to work on. The money
was excellent too. I wrote the freelancers course for people who would
enjoy this work – there was not much available information around.
I am happy to have helped, and to
go on helping people find interesting and useful work in freelance proofreading
and/or copyediting. |

Make
the most
of the Internet |
|
The Internet has opened up new
avenues. Many of those who have succeeded had no previous experience
of either copyediting or proofreading yet the course taught them all
they needed to know. You can pay five times as much to attend a one-day
course! - and double that for a two-day course. With freelancers.co.uk
you get quality, dedication, and
value.

Use
e-mail for any queries
|
When you have completed your work on the course, you will need to send
a list of suitable queries, as if you were working
freelance for a publishing firm.
Just send in your queries by post/mail for me to answer. |
Alternatively, e-mail theeditor@freelancers.co.uk.
For specific queries, or if you just get stuck, during the course,
just e-mail me for a quick reply. |
Pay attention to the smaller details!
