How To Order

While you're reading through the FAQs a short piece to reflect upon.

"The sea, autumn mildness, islands bathed in light, fine rain spreading a diaphanous veil over the immortal nakedness of Greece. Happy is the man, I thought, who, before dying, has the good fortune to sail the Aegean Sea. Many are the joys of this world - women, fruit, ideas. But to cleave that sea in the gentle autumnal season, murmuring the name of each islet, is to my mind the joy most apt to transport the heart of man into paradise. Nowhere else can one pass so easily and serenely from reality to dream. The frontiers dwindle, and from the masts of the most ancient ships spring branches and fruits. It is as if here in Greece necessity is the mother of miracles."

Here's another:

"What magnet to
our stifled love
holds this blue,
these tawny cliffs
and always the
mountains framing
the distance?
Why does the
  breeze blow with
a scent of baking
herbs which the
misty shores echo
in their colours?
What is this element,
hybrid of air and
water, physical as
a kiss, with which
the night enfolds us?
The islands float
past . . .veiled
in the odorous
haze of evening."

How Long Does It Take? How Much Can I Earn? FAQs in more detail.

How long does it take? About 1 to 2 months, depending on how much spare time you have. You work at your own pace.

Do I need any previous experience? No. Look at this recent comment from someone without previous experience: "I passed a test and almost immediately was given a book to proofread. Now I have finished my sixth book for them – thanks to you and your course."

Is success guaranteed? No, but with determination and effort, success can be yours. It's up to you.

How much can I earn?

Around £14-£15 per hour for proofreading (approximately 10-12 pages/hr) and more for copyediting (around £15-£20+ per hour). You'll find similar rates in the US.

What do I need? The course supplies all the essential information you will need.

Will it suit me? Try it and see. You may find that you have a flair for this kind of work. You can only gain from the experience. There is also an increasing demand from publishers for people who can edit disks/files on screen. You can learn how.

Can it help me to find work as an editorial assistant? Yes. It will give you a head start over the competition. The usual route into publishing is to start as an editorial assistant (not well paid), gain experience, and then go freelance if you wish. I managed to find freelance work first, mainly because I loved the work. I can show you how to do it but you need application, determination, and the ability to develop your own skills. This is my experience, over some 8 to 10 years as a freelance copyeditor and proofreader.

I don't claim to offer the "Holy Grail" in publishing – but I can give you as much practical help and advice as I can.

Will I enjoy it? You'll probably love it but get irritated at the errors you'll miss at the first attempt! All in all, a valuable learning experience. "The Freelancers course really does work" is a frequently quoted opinion. Why? Because it offers practical advice and help based on years of experience, and tells you how (and the best ways) to get started.

Once you've learnt the basics, you can also use the Internet to download files/books from authors for correction and explore various openings.

Is there a guarantee? Yes, if you are not entirely happy with the course, just return it within 30 days of receipt in good condition, and you'll get a full refund.

If I live in the USA, can you help? Yes, a specially written US version (American English) with tips and guidelines for the American freelance market is available now.

Can you help me with queries, or even if I just get "stuck"? Yes, you can e-mail me at any time and I'll do my best to make sure all your queries are answered as quickly as possible.

Do you appreciate comments and suggestions? Constructive criticism is warmly welcomed. Any comments you may have subsequently about the course (positive ones preferred!) will be gratefully acknowledged. Keep in touch!
